The MacArthur High School Bands have stood for excellence for over 38 years. Currently, the band program's enrollment is 185 members with the Instrumental Music Department offering Wind Ensemble, Symphonic Band, Concert Band, JV Band, Symphony Orchestra, Jazz Ensemble, Winter Drum Line, Winter Guard and the Marching Band, "THE BIG BLUE MARCHING MACHINE," open to all students at MacArthur High School. An outstanding vocal program with five choirs compliments the total music program at MacArthur High School.
The MacArthur Bands have a 28 year record of Superior UIL Sweepstake Awards in marching, concert and sight-reading. Winners of major music contests in California, Texas and Florida add to success of the "Mac" band program. During 1996 the band was named as 8th finalist in the Texas Honor Band Competition for 5A Bands, won the TCGC Texas State Indoor Marching Percussion title, and was the grand winner in the 14 week All-American Music Festival for concert bands (1996). The marching band was one of 17 final 5A bands at the State Marching Contest, November 1995, finishing 11th out of all 5A bands in the state of Texas. The Honors Wind Ensemble was named one of 16 top bands from the United States to perform a feature concert during March of 1997 at the National Concert Band Festival in Indianapolis, Indiana and the Mac Flags added a state championship on the TCGC Winter Color Guard circuit in the spring of 1998. In 2007, the winterguard won a TCGC state championship, as well. The fall of 1999 began with the Mac Band and Flags placing 4th at the BOA Southwest Regional in San Antonio and receiving their 27th first division rating in marching.
All "Mac" members are still extremely proud of winning two State Marching Band Championships in Class 5A. (1984 - 1985). Numerous students from the MacArthur High School Band program have gone on to successful careers as professional musicians performing in major symphonies, chamber groups and teaching at the collegiate level.
Music Education is a highly valued part of the Northeast educational experience and especially at MacArthur High School. Instruction begins in the sixth grade at middle schools which allow instrumental music to be taught daily. We want to thank our outstanding middle school directors at Omar N. Bradley Middle School, Driscoll Middle School, John Nance Garner Middle School, Krueger Middle School; our principal Mrs. Bobbie Turnbo; our superintendent, Dr. Richard Middleton aand all of our outstanding MacArthur High School Faculty for their continuing support of MacArthur High School Band Program.
